Make Your Calls

call to action for december 10, 2025

Background

Sutter Health is the latest healthcare organization to surrender to the Trump regime’s attack on gender-affirming care for minors. In November, Sutter abruptly announced that on December 10 it will end provision of that service to patients under the age of 19, leaving families scrambling to figure out how their kids will now receive this medically necessary care.

To make matters worse, Sutter notified caregivers of this change on Transgender Day of Remembrance. It also made the announcement after the annual open enrollment period closed, thereby trapping many families in a system that is cutting off care that their children need.

California law clearly protects citizens from discrimination and guarantees everyone— regardless of gender identity—access to medically necessary care.

We know that ending this care will increase anxiety, depression, and suicide risk among trans youth. Major medical associations—including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Endocrine Society—recognize gender-affirming care as evidence-based, medically necessary treatment.

Let’s tell Sutter Health leaders that we’re outraged by their decision to abandon patients in this way. If you are a patient in the Sutter Health system (which includes Palo Alto Medical Foundation), be sure to highlight that point: You are in a position to exert pressure by going elsewhere to access healthcare.

NOTE: This week, instead of advising you to “make your calls,” we are suggesting that you write letters to leaders of a local institution that is “obeying in advance” when the moment calls for courage and adherence to professional standards.

Subject: Provide necessary medical care to trans youth!

Dear Sutter Health leadership team:

I am writing to express my outrage about Sutter Health’s reported plans to stop gender-affirming care for patients under the age of 19. Even though the Trump administration wants to ban access to vital, life-saving healthcare for trans kids, nothing legally requires Sutter to end these services now.

In fact, California law clearly protects citizens from discrimination and guarantees everyone— regardless of gender identity—access to medically necessary care.

Research has documented the severe consequences of denying gender-affirming care to young people who need it: They are at significantly increased risk for anxiety, depression, and suicidality. Major medical associations—including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Endocrine Society—recognize gender-affirming care as evidence-based, medically necessary treatment.

I urge you to:

  • Halt plans to discontinue gender-affirming care for youth
  • Bring affected families and trans-led organizations into your decision-making process
  • Commit publicly to providing gender-affirming care to all patients, regardless of age

With urgency,

[Your name—and, if applicable, your affiliation with Sutter Health]
