Make Your Calls

call to action for May 29, 2025

Background

The main story in Congress continues to focus on House Republicans’s big, ugly reconciliation bill, which now awaits action by the Senate. If passed in anything like its current form, the bill would land a devastating blow against a wide range of crucial services—and essential values—that matter deeply to Americans everywhere. We must urge our senators stand firm against the bill.

And, closer to home, we need to make sure that local public servants affirm our values as well. There’s just no good reason for the City of Palo Alto to patronize Elon Musk’s X platform.

Call Your Senators

Alex Padilla | 202-224-3553 (DC) or 415-981-9369 (local)

Adam Schiff | 202-224-3841 (DC) or 415-393-0707 (local)

Hi, I'm a constituent from [your zip code]. My name is [your full name].

Republicans are trying to pass an unpopular and cruel bill that will take food from the mouths of hungry children, rob 14 million Americans of their healthcare, and blow up our deficit. It’s outrageous

.

I fully and unequivocally oppose everything in Republicans’ death bill. I oppose the cuts to clean energy tax credits, to SNAP and Medicaid, to taxes on gun silencers, to healthcare for transgender people, and to Planned Parenthood. I  oppose the provision that makes it nearly impossible for federal judges to hold anyone in contempt. I oppose the provision that deregulates AI for 10 years. Doing all of this to pay for tax cuts for people and corporations that already pay too few taxes? You’ve got to be kidding me!

Please tell Senator [name] to block this horrible bill in any way possible. Thanks.

Extra Credit (Local Edition)

The City of Palo Alto continues to use X—the social media platform owned by Elon Musk (and formerly known as Twitter)—or official city business. And it’s high time that our local government stopped drawing clicks, eyeballs, and dollars to a platform that Musk uses to advance his anti-democracy agenda.

Sign this petition to urge the city to leave X for good. And if you wish to take an extra step, you can call or email members of the Palo Alto City Council. Go here to find their contact information.

Here’s sample message to use when contacting City Council members:

Elon Musk has done terrible damage to our country. He has recklessly presided over violence against essential parts of our government that protected us. He has weakened our country and made us all less safe.

By using X, the platform that Musk owns, Palo Alto is contributing to his wealth and power. Please use your influence to stop the city's use of X to communicate official city business. The city can use other platforms, including alternative social networks such as Bluesky, in place of X.
