call to action for SEPTEMBER 3, 2025

Background

The next big budget fight is brewing in Washington, D.C. Federal funding runs out on September 30. So Congress has less than a month to pass a new funding measure and to avert a government shutdown.

In July, Republicans used the reconciliation process to bypass the 60-vote filibuster so that they could ram through a Big Ugly Bill that gutted Medicaid and SNAP while supercharging ICE. This time, the GOP needs votes from Senate Democrats to pass a funding bill. With a united front, Democrats can block extreme MAGA policies and even  reverse some of the damage that Trump has done to vital services and to Congress’ spending power under the Constitution.

A similar budget battle took place back in March. Unfortunately, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and nine other Dems surrendered, and Republicans walked away with nearly everything that they wanted.

Senators Padilla and Schiff held the line in March, and we should be grateful to them for doing so. But they need to do more this time. They need to pressure Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to keep Senate Democrats united in opposition to any bill that cuts essential services and programs.

Call Your U.S. Senators

Alex Padilla | 202-224-3553 (D.C.) or 415-981-9369 (local)

Adam Schiff | 202-224-3841 (D.C.) or 415-393-0707 (local)

Sample Script

Hi, I'm a constituent from [your zip code]. My name is [your full name].

I’m calling about the government funding measure that Congress needs to pass by the end of this month. I’m so grateful to Senator [senator’s name] and to other Democrats held the line to block Trump’s dangerous funding plan in March. But it was infuriating to hear that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and some other Democrats had surrendered, giving MAGA Republicans nearly everything that they wanted.

I urge the senator to call on Leader Schumer to unify the caucus in opposition to any Republican budget that does not protect our fundamental rights and essential government services.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
