Make Your Calls

call to action for July 30, 2025

Background

In recent months, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has been contacting states to demand access to sensitive election data. For example:

  • In Minnesota and Nevada, state officials received nearly identical letters from the DOJ that sought access to state voter rolls.
  • In Colorado, the DOJ made an unprecedented, sweeping demand for all 2024 election records.
  • In Rhode Island, prosecutors from the DOJ’s criminal division sought a meeting to discuss a potential election data sharing agreement.

According to Democracy Docket, this effort appears to be aimed at pressing states to tighten voting rules in ways that would restrict ballot access. Former DOJ attorneys and voting rights advocates told Democracy Docket that this demand for voter data is deeply troubling.

California may be on the DOJ’s hit list, and we need to urge Governor Gavin Newsom and our state legislators to resist any federal demands for California election data.

Sample Script

Hi, I'm a constituent from [your zip code]. My name is [your full name].

I'm calling to urge you to defend the integrity of our elections from Trump administration efforts to pressure states to hand over sensitive voter data. If the Department of Justice demands data from California, we are counting on you to make sure that the state refuses to cooperate.

States, not the federal government, have constitutional authority over elections, and the DOJ’s attempts to access and interfere with sensitive voter data are a threat both to our rights as voters and to our democracy.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
