Background

Does it feel like deja vu? We went through a similar budget showdown back in March. That time, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and several other Senate Democrats folded. Among other excuses, they said they were worried that Trump would use a shutdown as an excuse to fire thousands of federal workers. As it turns out, he didn’t need an excuse; he fired workers anyway.

Then, over the summer, Republicans passed their Big Ugly Budget Bill that slashed health care spending to pay for tax cuts for billionaires.

This time, Democratic Senators are standing firm. They are demanding restoration of health care subsidies and an end to Trump’s unconstitutional refusal to spend legally appropriated funds for vital programs. Bottom line: No blank check for Trump’s illegal power grab!

Let’s thank Senators Padilla and Schiff for their work so far, and urge them to keep fighting—and to keep Leader Schumer and other Democrats from folding.
