On Sunday, a group of eight Senate Democrats snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Less than a week after a series of sensational Democratic electoral wins, they surrendered to Trump and the Republicans in the shutdown fight.
But the betrayal extends beyond the eight Democrats who voted “yes” on the bill to end the shutdown without substantial Republican concessions. The fact that this group consists entirely of senators who are retiring or who won’t face primaries for several years gives the game away: Clearly, these Dems were giving cover to a larger faction of their colleagues who were eager to wave a white flag.
Which brings us to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. Despite his “no” vote on the capitulation bill, it’s clear that this outcome was a direct result of Schumer’s leadership. Either he blessed this surrender, or he was incapable of keeping his caucus in line on a winning strategy.
We need leaders who will fight for democracy, and Schumer has shown that he’s not up to the task. Let’s tell our senators to call for Schumer to step aside now from his role as Minority Leader.
Alex Padilla | 202-224-3553 (D.C.) or 415-981-9369 (local)
Adam Schiff | 202-224-3841 (D.C.) or 415-393-0707 (local)
Hi, I'm a constituent from [your zip code]. My name is [your full name].
I’m calling to ask Senator [Padilla or Schiff] to call for Senator Schumer to step aside as Minority Leader. It’s time to allow someone new to lead the Democratic caucus.
Senator Schumer has had a long and honorable career. But this week he led Senate Democrats into a devastating surrender in the shutdown fight. It’s not enough for him to vote “no” on the awful funding bill. He allowed a budget that will harm millions of Americans to sail through the Senate. On November 4th, voters like me showed up in historic numbers to show that they want leaders willing to hold the line against Trumpism. We want fighters.
Schumer has shown that he’s not up for the fight. If Senator [Padilla or Schiff] is ready to fight, then he must call on Schumer to step down.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
