In Texas (and potentially other states), Republicans are moving to make their already highly gerrymandered maps even more advantageous to the GOP. If the new Texas gerrymandering scheme goes into effect, an estimated five seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are likely to shift from Democratic to Republican control. Here in California, we can—and must—fight fire with fire. A redrawn map of U.S. House districts in our state would help counter the Texas power grab.
In 2010, a ballot initiative took redistricting power from the California legislature and gave it to a non-partisan commission. Governor Gavin Newsome has raised the prospect of calling a special election in November to amend the constitution so that the legislature can draw new maps. Let’s make sure that our representatives in the legislature get fully behind that plan.
The clock is ticking. The legislature reconvenes August 14, and then will have only a few weeks to secure the needed two-thirds majority to place the issue on the ballot. We need to pressure members of the state assembly and state senate to act fast and get the process rolling.
For many of us, our assemblymember is Mark Berman. If you are not sure who your U.S. representative is, go here.

For many of us, our state senator is Josh Becker.. If you are not sure who your U.S. representative is, go here.

Hi, I'm a constituent from [your zip code]. My name is [your full name].
I'm calling to urge you to support Governor Newsom’s proposal for a special election to allow the legislature to redraw our maps and increase Democratic representation.
While I normally support non-partisan reforms like California’s Redistricting Commission, these are not normal times. Texas Republicans are rigging the game. We must respond assertively—and retake the House in 2026 to stop Trump’s assault on democracy.
Please take the lead on this and work to ensure the measure passes.
