The Delaney Hall facility in Newark, New Jersey, has become a symbol of everything wrong with Trump's detention machine. Detainees are surviving on contaminated food and rancid water; needed medical care is delayed or denied. Conditions got so bad that detainees launched a hunger strike on May 22.
In addition, ICE blocked efforts by Governor Mikie Sherill and members of Congress to conduct legally mandated inspections of Delaney Hall. At one point, ICE agents used pepper spray on Senator Andy Kim when he was trying to access the facility.
After eventually entering inside the facility, Kim said that what he witnessed there was deeply troubling. He saw servings of rancid, congealed milk. He met with a pregnant woman and with a man who has Stage 3 lung cancer, both of whom said that they had been denied needed medical care.
Our leaders must not look away. Let’s call on our Members of Congress to draw attention to the inhumane conditions at Delaney Hall and at detention centers across the country. And let’s make sure that they do all they can to block further ICE funding.
