call to action for January 7, 2025

Background

Trump just launched an unauthorized war against Venezuela. On January 2, without provocation or approval from Congress, he ordered U.S. forces to storm Caracas and capture President Nicolás Maduro. Now he says that “we” will “run” Venezuela and control its oil until a “transition” happens.

Venezuela poses no threat to our country. This attack on that country is simply a thuggish attempt to control its natural resources and to assert Trump’s dominance in the Western Hemisphere. Not only does the attack violate the U.S. Constitution and the War Powers Act; it also severely undermines the rules-based international order that has kept us safe since World War II.

The raid on January 2 wasn’t a bolt from the blue. It was the climax of a slow, calculated escalation. For months, at Trump’s command, U.S. forces have been bombing Venezuelan fishing boats and coastal targets under the vague pretext of an effort to stop narcotics trafficking. At the same time, American warships and aircraft were massing near Venezuelan waters in what we now know was a staging action for a larger operation.

Senators Adam Schiff and Alex Padilla, along with Representative Sam Liccardo, have issued strong statements that condemn Trump’s lawless and reckless action in Venezuela. We should thank them for doing so. But we also need them to push Democratic leaders—including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries—and other Congressional Democrats to take a strong, uncompromising stand on this issue.

Call Your U.S. Senators

Alex Padilla | 202-224-3553 (D.C.) or 415-981-9369 (local)

Adam Schiff | 202-224-3841 (D.C.) or 415-393-0707 (local)

Sample Script

Hi, I'm a constituent from [your zip code]. My name is [your full name].

I’m calling to thank Senator [Padilla or Schiff] for speaking out against Trump’s illegal, thuggish assault on Venezuela. But I want to him to go further, so please pass along this message:

I don’t want another endless war, and I ask you to lobby your colleagues and to do everything in your power to halt Trump’s reckless and lawless actions in Venezeula and across the Western Hemisphere. Make sure that Minority Leader Schumer and other Democrats in Congress understand that those actions are not only illegal but also—more importantly—immoral and un-American.

Thank you for your time and attention.

Call Your U.S. Representative

For most of us, that’s Sam Liccardo. If you are not sure who your U.S. representative is, go here.

Sam Liccardo | 202-225-8104 (DC) or 408-245-2339 (local)
