Trump has started a war of choice against Iran, and it is already wreaking tragic consequences. Among the first targets hit last weekend was a girls' elementary school; at least 165 people were killed in that incident. Six U.S. service members died in a separate incident.
Congress can stop this war. California's senators and our local representatives—including Sam Liccardo, Ro Khanna, and Kevin Mullin—have rightly condemned it. After initially offering a tepid response, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries are now pushing for passage of a War Powers Resolution that would force Trump to seek congressional authorization for his reckless war. The resolution faces long odds of passing a GOP-controlled Congress, and even if it passes, Trump will almost certainly veto it. But putting everyone in Congress on record as supporting or opposing Trump’s war matters. And our representatives also have other tools that they must be ready to use.
We should thank our elected officials for standing up. Then we should push them harder. Every Democrat in Congress should be on record with a full-throated condemnation of Trump’s war. They should condemn it on moral grounds, and not just for procedural reasons. Our elected officials should also pressure Democratic leaders to use the budget process to cut funding for this catastrophic war. Half-measures won't do.

Hi, I'm a constituent from [your zip code]. My name is [your full name].
I'm calling to thank Senator [Padilla or Schiff] for speaking out against Trump's illegal war on Iran. I’m also calling to urge him to keep the pressure on to stop this war.
The War Powers Resolution is a critical first step, and I urge the senator to vote yes on the resolution—and to push every colleague to do the same. Even if the resolution is defeated by a Republican opposition or by a Trump veto, I want Senator [NAME] to keep standing in opposition to this reckless, illegal war. For example, he and other Senators can use the budget process to stop funding for the war. The American people do not want this war, our troops are in harm's way, and the Constitution clearly requires Congress to provide a check on presidential warmongering.
Thank you for your time and attention.
For most of us, that’s Sam Liccardo. If you are not sure who your U.S. representative is, go here.
