“Blue California” is at risk of choosing two Republicans to run against each other in the California governor’s race this fall. That’s because our open primary system selects the top two vote-getters. With two Republicans and seven Democrats now in the race, Democrats could split their majority such that only Republicans would be on the November ballot.
Our task is simple: Contact lower-tier candidates and ask them to suspend their campaigns to prevent a Republican-only general election. (“Lower-tier” refers to candidates who are polling lower, either in the public polls and in the Indivisible survey.)
A recent survey of California Indivisible members tracks closely with general polling results. Three candidates are in the top tier:
Four candidates are in the lower tier:
We need to act immediately. Every day sees money and attention going to low-polling
candidates who will split the vote and make it more likely that we will end up with a Republican governor. Email the four lower-tier candidates today and ask them to step aside for the good of California. This is not about their qualifications. It is about the math.
And if you have time, please also call prominent California Democratic leaders and urge them to endorse a candidate in the top tier.

Dear [NAME],
Thank you for your leadership and your service to California.
I write to you with a difficult request: I call on you to end your campaign for governor now.
My request has nothing to do with your qualifications or fitness to lead our state. Due to a runoff system beyond your or my control, we run the risk that Democratic candidates will split the primary vote, enabling an all-GOP ballot in November. We cannot afford to take that risk.
Ending your campaign will signal to voters like me that you truly have the best interests of California at heart and will enhance my view of your candidacy in the future. Conversely, if you stay in the race, it will signal to me that you privilege personal ambition over the welfare of our state.
This is not about the merits of your campaign; it’s about the math. Thank you for considering this urgent request.

Hi, I am a California voter from [ZIP CODE]. My name is [FULL NAME].
Please help prevent a Republican from becoming the next California governor. To ensure a smaller field of Democratic primary candidates, please consider encouraging lower-tier candidates to drop out and endorsing one of the top-polling candidates—Xavier Becerra, Katie Porter, or Tom Steyer.
Thank you for your time and attention.
